Robin Mackenzie SWE
Robin Mackenzie is fascinated by the changing weather and light on land and water. He looks for hidden coves, abandoned places and rugged scenery. Light breaking through cloud, catching on wave tossed stones and reflecting off shimmering sea inspire his unique wood engravings and linocuts.
Mackenzie experiments with texture and methods of mark making within his prints. The traditional tools allow for beautifully fine and delicate lines but also brutal and broad gouges into the material. It is the balance between these that Mackenzie likes to explore, incorporating fine washes of colour using oil based inks alongside the stark contrast of a wood block printed in dark, velvety black.
Mackenzie’s recent wood engravings bring a new, playful approach in the manner of abstracted shapes and textures created with a broad range of engraving tools. The use of the natural boxwood round allows the composition to flow and break.
Mackenzie graduated from Arts University Bournemouth in 2013 with a BA (Hons) in illustration.
He was elected to the Society of Wood Engravers in 2015.
He has exhibited widely and has undertaken a range of commissions from clients including BBC, SAGA cruises, Ardbeg Whiskey and Simon and Schuster publishers.
